The U.S. Government provides over 1,000 benefit and assistance programs to citizens of the United States. Benefits range from helping you with your career development to assistance with basic living expenses. There is government help available to assist you with childcare, counseling, disaster relief, healthcare, housing, and veterans care. In most cases, there are eligibility requirements that you must meet before you can receive the benefits.
In 2002, the E-Grants Initiative was created to improve government services to the public. The website Grants.gov was established to provide information on over 1,000 government grant programs that awards around $500 billion annually. Grants are not considered benefits like Social Security or Medicare. A U.S. Government grant is an award of financial assistance from a government agency to an entity to carry out a specific public purpose of support. U.S. Government grants are not loans or federal assistance to individuals.
The U.S. Government is one of the largest employers in the United States. The official federal job site is USAJobs.gov. The website was created to assist you in your search for a job with the federal government. You are able to search for jobs that match your talents and skills and apply directly to those jobs. Only Civilian Federal job opportunities are announced through USAJobs. There are usually 25,000 available jobs listed on any day with jobs being added and removed every day. In order for you to apply for a job there must be a vacancy announcement. Filling out a federal application is not difficult and it involves submitting a resume, usually completing an assessment and may require additional information such as transcripts, SF-50s from government employees and/or DD 214.
Department of Agriculture
The United States Department of Agriculture or USDA oversees agencies such as the United States Forest Service (USFS) and provides services to Americans related to food, agriculture and natural resources. Emphasis areas include agricultural production and science, agricultural education and outreach, food and nutrition, food laws and regulations, food marketing and trade, natural resources and environmental conservation, research and science, rural and community development, travel and recreation and USDA employee services.
Department of Defense
The United States Department of Defense or DOD represents America’s largest, respected and oldest government agency. The DOD has its root in the American revolutionary war. The Department of Defense is headquartered in the Pentagon. The DOD houses the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force. The DOD also employees a large civilian force. By housing many facilities and installations worldwide, the DOD ensures national security for not only Americans, but also for many other countries and citizens of the world.
Department of Education
The United States Department of Education or ED was created in 1980 as a result of the consolidation of several existing federal agencies. The Department of Education strives to promote student achievement and to ensure America’s competitiveness in the new global world and economy. The ED establishes federal financial aid guidelines, oversees the distribution of financial aid and manages the funds. National school data collection efforts, school grants, prioritizing national school issues and monitoring discrimination issues are all undertaken by the Department of Education.
Department of Energy
The United States Department of Energy or DOE addresses energy, environmental; and nuclear issues related to America’s energy vital system. The DOE increases national energy supplies, modernizes energy infrastructure, optimizes use of energy and cooperates on international energy issues. The DOE also provides national security functions such as cyber security and protection, operations security for the Capital and preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction. The safe disposition of nuclear waste, radioactive waste storage and environmental conservation related to energy are also important DOE functions.
Department of Health and Human Services (Social Services)
The United States Department if Health and Human Services or HHS is primary agency in charge of protecting the health of Americans everywhere. HHS also provides vital human services for the Americans who are at a disadvantage. Health and Human Services also works closely with state and local governments to implement HHS funded programs. Key HHS organizations include the Administration on Aging, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, Centers for Disease Control, Medicare and Medicaid Services, Welfare, the Food and Drug Administration, Health Resources, Indian Health and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration.
Department of Interior
The United States Department of the Interior or DOI has the responsibility of protecting America’s natural resources and heritage. The Interior Department also is the primary agency that works with tribal communities and nations. The Department of the Interior also supplies the energy needed by Americans in future years. Key agencies within the Department of Interior include the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, Fish and Wildlife Service, Geological Survey or USGS, Mineral Management Service, National Interagency Fire Center, the National Park Service and the Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement.
Department of Labor
The mission of the Department of Labor or DOL is to foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the wag earners, job seekers, and retirees of the United States. The DOL also improves working conditions, advances opportunities for profitable employment, assures work related benefits, and employee and employer rights. Department of State
The US Department of State has a specific mission pf advancing freedom for the benefit of the American people and the international community by assisting with building and sustaining a more democratic, secure and prosperous world that is composed of well-governed states that respond to the needs of their people and reducing poverty and acting responsibly within the international system. Key agencies within the Department of State are Arms Control and International Security, Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs, Global Affairs, Political Affairs, Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs and the Mission to the United Nations.
The U.S. passport identifies the bearer as a U.S. citizen or national. It is a request to foreign governments to permit travel or temporary residence in their territories and access to all lawful, local aid and protection. It also allows bearers access to U.S. consular services and assistance while abroad and re-entry into the U.S. Within Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs, the Passport Services Directorate serves U.S. citizens intending international travel through passport issuance and protects the integrity of the U.S. passport as proof of U.S. citizenship at home and around the world.
Department of Treasury
The Department of the Treasury is an executive department and is the treasury of the United States Government. In 1789 the U.S. Treasury Department was established by an Act of Congress to manage government revenue. The United States Treasury Department is charged with a wide range of financial responsibilities. In addition to monetary functions such as budgets, taxes, and currency production and circulation, the U.S. Treasury also oversees critical functions in enforcement, economic policy development, and international treaty talks.
Tax Department (IRS)
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) handles taxes in the United States. The IRS is a bureau of the Department of the Treasury and one of the world's most efficient tax administrators. The IRS provides American taxpayers with top quality service by helping them understand and meet their tax responsibilities by applying the tax law with fairness and integrity. In the United States, the Congress passes tax laws and requires taxpayers to comply. The role of the taxpayer is to understand and meet their tax obligations. The role of the IRS is to help the majority of the compliant taxpayers with the tax law and to make sure that the minority that do not comply, pay their fair share.
Department of Veterans Affairs
The United States Department of Veterans Affairs or VA strives to recognize former President Lincoln’s promise of “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan” by serving ad honoring the men and women who represent Americas veterans of domestic and foreign wars. The agency establishes immigration policies, priorities and services that ensure that no one is admitted who is a threat to public safety. The USCIS make decisions on the applications and petitions of potential immigrants to the United States. This decision process is termed adjudication and involves immigration visa petitions, naturalization petitions, and asylum applications.
