United States Department of Commerce (DOC)

The historic mission of the Department of Commerce is "to foster, promote, and develop the foreign and domestic commerce" of the United States. This has evolved, because of legislative and administrative additions, to encompass broadly the responsibility to foster, serve, and promote the Nation's economic development and technological advancement.

Commerce Bureaus

Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) - BIS advances U.S. national security, foreign policy, and economic objectives by ensuring an effective export control and treaty compliance system and promoting continued U.S. strategic technology leadership.

Economics and Statistics Administration (ESA) - ESA provides broad and targeted economic data, analyses and forecasts for use by Government agencies, businesses and others, as well as develops domestic and international economic policy.

Bureau of the Census (Census Bureau) - The Census Bureau serves as the leading source of quality data about the nation's people and economy. They honor privacy, protect confidentiality, share their expertise globally, and conduct their work openly.

Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) - BEA promotes a better understanding of the U.S. economy by providing the timeliest, relevant, and accurate economic accounts data in an objective and cost-effective manner. BEA produces economic accounts statistics that enable government and business decision-makers, researchers, and the American public to follow and understand the performance of the Nation's economy. To do this, BEA collects source data, conducts research and analysis, develops and implements estimation methodologies, and disseminates statistics to the public.

Economic Development Administration (EDA) - EDA was established to generate jobs, help retain existing jobs, and stimulate industrial and commercial growth in economically distressed areas of the United States. EDA assistance is available to rural and urban areas of the Nation experiencing high unemployment, low income, or other severe economic distress.

International Trade Administration (ITA) - ITA creates prosperity by strengthening the competitiveness of U.S. industry, promoting trade and investment, and ensuring fair trade and compliance with trade laws and agreements. Trade.gov provides you access to ITA's valuable information and services regarding U.S. international trade policy.

Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) - MBDA is the only federal agency dedicated to advancing the establishment and growth of minority-owned firms in the United States. Through a network of minority business centers and strategic partners, MBDA works with minority entrepreneurs who wish to grow their businesses in size, scale and capacity. These firms better positioned to create jobs, impact local economies and expand into national and global markets. MBDA has spent more than four decades increasing the competitiveness of minority firms.

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) - NIST promotes U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) - NOAA attempts to understand and predict changes in Earth's environment and conserve and manage coastal and marine resources to meet the Nation's economic, social, and environmental needs. From daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings and climate monitoring to fisheries management, coastal restoration and supporting marine commerce, NOAA's products and services support economic vitality and affect more than one-third of America's gross domestic product.

National Technical Information Service (NTIS) - NTIS serves as the largest central resource for government-funded scientific, technical, engineering, and business related information available today. For more than 60 years, NTIS has assured businesses, universities, and the public timely access to approximately 3 million publications covering over 350 subject areas.

National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) - NTIA is the President's principal adviser on telecommunications and information policy issues. NTIA also manages the Federal use of spectrum; performs cutting-edge telecommunications research and engineering, including resolving technical telecommunications issues for the Federal government and private sector; and administers infrastructure and public telecommunications facilities grants.

United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) - USPTO ensures that the intellectual property system contributes to a strong global economy, encourages investment in innovation, and fosters entrepreneurial spirit. The USPTO promotes industrial and technological progress in the United States and strengthens the national economy.
